Clean Energy is Welcome in Fabulous Las Vegas!
This year has been momentous for clean energy in Nevada! We’ve seen state legislators work together to improve our clean energy policies, our supporters have spoken before the Public Utilities Commission in support of clean energy, and our utility company has decided to decommission their coal fired power plants and invest in new clean energy projects! So when it comes to solar powering the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign- well that’s just icing on the cake!
The 25 feet tall “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign, designed by Betty Willis, has greeted millions of Las Vegas visitors at the South end of Las Vegas Boulevard since 1959. When the switch is flipped on the solar project, the sign’s neon, backlighting and 89-bulb border will be powered by three solar trees, which are being installed along the central median where the sign stands. The solar trees will be placed so as not to interfere with the iconic view that has served as The Strip’s welcome mat for more than 50 years.
Almost as exciting as solar powering the sign itself was the collaboration, support and enthusiasm we received! The sign is fully funded by the Las Vegas Centennial History Grant and donations from CEA and NV Energy as well as in kind services from Bombard Renewable Energy. Just this past Monday, November 18th we joined our partners at GreenChips, the Clark County Commission and our generous funders to break ground and bring Las Vegas’s past together with its future. The project will be completed by January of 2014.
