New Poll: Nevadans Overwhelmingly Support Clean Energy!

At CEP, we have spent the last 5 years educating Nevadans across the state about the enormous potential that the clean energy sector holds for Nevada. We’ve found that when Nevadans hear our message, they get it: we have an abundance of sun, geothermal hot spots and other clean energy resource, and no coal or existing natural gas resources and minimal oil. Because of this, we have a history of smart policy and sound investments that have built the foundation of a booming clean energy sector in our state.

Now, a new poll shows that our hard work is paying off!  Nevadans across the spectrum overwhelmingly support clean energy.

Among the poll's findings:

•  71% of Nevada's electorate believes that renewable energy will create jobs in Nevada.

•  80% of residents agree that government incentives to adopt more renewable energy will create more jobs in Nevada.

•   81% of respondents believe “it is possible for the United States to produce most of its energy from renewable resources in the next few decades.”

•   82% of Nevadans agree that renewables have a key role in helping the country expand its energy portfolio and achieve energy independence."

We still have work to do: the poll did find that Nevadans were divided on how the clean energy market should grow. Some believe there isn’t a role for government, despite the significant role government plays in the current fossil fuel industry.  Regardless, respondents with reservations about tax incentives remained extremely supportive for developing renewables in Nevada.

Another challenge was that many respondents were not aware of the tremendous technology advances and plummeting prices that have made clean energy more and more accessible in the past few years.  Again, however, these respondents agreed that renewables were key to Nevada’s economic future.

Over the coming year, the Clean Energy Project will continue to focus on our mission to educate and engage Nevadans about the importance of developing Nevada’s clean energy economy. We’ll focus on making sure that people understand the importance of  incentives like the Renewable Energy Tax Abatement program that play a key role in attracting investment to our state. We’ll also focus on reminding decision makers that Nevada’s early adoption of a Renewable Portfolio Standard has been instrumental in jump-starting our clean energy industry. CEP knows that investing in renewable energy is investing in Nevada.

And, of course, we’ll be continuing all our other important work as well: helping Nevadans find effective ways to express support for clean energy policy, supporting small businesses who care about clean energy with programs like our Buy Green List, tracking developments at the 2015 Legislative Session, and, not least of all, bringing top industry executives, leading policy makers and cutting edge thinkers to Nevada for the annual National Clean Energy Summit.

It’s going to be an exciting year. Stay posted!
