NEVADA POISED TO BENEFIT FROM NEW EPA CARBON POLLUTION STANDARDS

Through bipartisan leadership, Nevada is leading the nation on decreasing carbon pollution and is poised to economically benefit from the recommended existing power plant state emission standards.

Las Vegas, Nevada – June 2, 2014 – Today, the Environmental Protection Agency released their recommended existing power plant carbon dioxide pollution standards.  Clean Energy Project sees these standards as an opportunity of which Nevada is already taking advantage.

Through the past decade of supporting clean energy policies and the bipartisan passage of Senate Bill 123 last session, Nevada has become a national leader in reducing carbon pollution through construction of new renewable energy projects and the scheduled closure of existing carbon polluting power plants. In addition, the state has provided $500 million in tax abatements since 2010, which has produced a 10 to one return by attracting $5.5 billion in private investment to develop Nevada’s natural solar, wind and geothermal resources.

Nevada’s leadership has positioned the state well as State policy makers continue to develop the state’s plan to decrease carbon pollution.

“Through our past commitment to carbon pollution reduction, and existing technologies already thriving in Nevada, the Silver State has the blueprint for our state plan,” said Lydia Ball, executive director of Clean Energy Project. “We applaud our state leaders who have not only addressed carbon pollution but are aggressively helping to develop a strong clean energy economy.”

Additionally, Nevada’s geographic location and vast clean energy recourses creates an opportunity for economic development. As each state develops and begins to implement their respective carbon pollution reduction plans, Nevada will be able to not only address its own clean energy needs, but also those of its neighboring states through generation and transmission.

“The economic opportunity for Nevada is immense,” said Troy Shay, Energy Inspectors Inc. “In addition to the vast geothermal, solar and wind production capabilities, Nevada companies and builders have already been working diligently on improving energy efficiency. This further commitment to reduce carbon pollution will only help Nevada’s growing clean energy economy.”

Nearly every aspect of America’s technology infrastructure has been modernized, with one glaring exception: the electric power system, which operating infrastructure, technology, and a basic business model dates to the early 1900s. Although an engineering marvel of the 20th century, the U.S. electric power system needs upgrading to meet the need for secure, clean, affordable energy in the 21st century.

Clean Energy Project sees the carbon standards state plans as an unprecedented opportunity to accelerate the transformation of our energy system. Each state will have the authority to craft its own emission reduction plan to meet EPA standards. These plans will develop market opportunities for clean technologies for years to come, creating demand for Nevada’s clean technologies and billions of dollars of investments.
